As 2023 comes to a close, the seed catalogs begin to pour in and the visions of next year’s gardens start to form. We have put together a page on our website for reference to things we do and companies we recommend. Nemotoids Are Our Friends
Here is Keith with the backpack sprayer spreading nemotoids in the garden. After much research by him, we found a strain that would help decrease the population of our unfriendly flea beetles, cucumber beetles, squash bugs, potato beetles and much more and of course we have the dog overseeing the operation.
Foliar Feeding
We have begun our foliar feedings. The ideal time is first thing in the morning or as the sunsets, when the birds are singing. The plants love it when the birds sing. Their leaf “pores” fully open so they can absorb the goodness from the foliar spray.
Garden work
Sunday we were in the garden all day adding carbon (compost) and amendments to the soil. Amendments are useless without a carbon source to hold it in the soil. One main reason chemical farming doesn’t work. It burns all the carbon as well.
What we’ve been up to
Keith and I just got back from a 3 day conference in Somerville, MA attending our second Soil and Nutrition Conference. We had the pleasure of listening to Graeme Sait and his colleague, Joel Williams speak about soil health and human health. They both are from Australia. Graeme began his talk about the reason he… Continue reading What we’ve been up to
Rock Dust
We have 32 tons of rock dust being delivered tomorrow. This is one of the key ingredients to growing the way we do. We will be selling this to anyone who is interested in using this on their gardens. We still have to figure out pricing.
Foliar Spraying
Here’s some pictures of Keith foliar spraying the garden. Spray contains calcium, fish emulsion (2-3-1) for spring growth with seaweed, bio-magic and a bit of molasses. Other pictures of the garden that is starting to come around. And our tomato plants with our cattle panel trellis system.
Bed Preparation
We thought we should post about what it takes to prepare a bed before we plant into it. For those of you who follow us, you know we feed our soil with nutrients that are severely lacking in many soils these days. Coincidentally, these same nutrients are also lacking in our bodies as well. By… Continue reading Bed Preparation
What we’ve been up to
It’s been a while since we’ve posted. Last weekend we trimmed the blueberries. Our hired help started working so that has helped us along with chores such as splitting wood for next year’s maple syrup season. More trees have been cut down along the stone wall – this wood will be for next year’s firewood… Continue reading What we’ve been up to
The Priviledge of Learning
It’s been a while since I’ve posted. We have been receiving great education in the past 2 ½ weeks. We’ve attended three different workshops/conferences. Our lastest was in Northhampton, Massachusetts where we had the pleasure of listening to John Kempf, Dan Kittredge and Derek Christianson speak about soil nutrition for two days. For our farm,… Continue reading The Priviledge of Learning
